“When Wonder Woman Punched a Polar Bear: What Alaska Representation in Comics Books Says About Alaska and Outsiders.”

Cyclops of the X-Men was born here. The FBI pursued draft dodgers. Batman hunted a werewolf. And Godzilla attacked the pipeline. The history of Alaska in comic books and strips dates back to the 19th century, across multiple generations and trends. From true life travel adventures before the Klondike Gold Rush to pipeline construction to modern superhero antics, comics have tried to capture very different aspects of life in Alaska, to wildly varying success.

Meet Spenard 2nd Saturday’s fall 2024 quarterly non-profit partner, YWCA Alaska! @ywcaak

Since 1987, the YWCA Alaska has worked tirelessly to challenge racist policy and rhetoric as well as support and empower women with all their goals. The mission of the YWCA is to Eliminate Racism, Empower Women, and Promote Peace, Justice, Freedom, and Dignity for all. The vision of the YWCA Alaska is to march bravely into an equitable, diverse, inclusive Alaska. Uplift our community and champion positive change through leadership in thought, behavior, and action. The work continues as we move through 2024 and into 2025 as basic human rights and monumental civil rights are put in jeopardy. We can’t do it alone and are so thankful to our many volunteers and supporters!

For over a century, filmmakers have used Alaska. They took the landscape and stories and carried them Outside to sell tickets and make money. Sometimes they tried to make it accurate. More often they failed, in ways alternatingly silly and insulting. But the larger pattern of representation illustrates something real, what people elsewhere thought of Alaska and Alaskans. RJ Fontaine is a self-taught, Slavic-American outsider/folk artist born and raised on Dena’ina land. Their handpainted stories aim to magnify kaleidoscopes of spirit within a single water droplet, wound, prayer, or moment in time. ‘Better Together’ is a tribute to the Spenard community and our tenacious desire to help one another succeed.
